Fairmaid Builders

After 19 years trading as a sole trader in 2009 Matthew and Rose formed a company now trading as Fairmaid Builders Ltd, with Matthew looking after the day to day running of the staff and making sure the work is done to the correct standard and on time and budget. Rose now looks after the day to day running of the office keeping the financials in order.

Our core work is supplying building knowledge and skill to the Dairy Farming Industry in the way of:

  • House building
  • Shed building
  • Alterations
  • Concrete work
  • Animal Shelters
  • Stand off pads
  • anything Rural and to do with the Farming community

From the north of Hokitika to the far South of South Westland, with a smile and providing a good job at a fair price.

As demand has required, we do building work in the residential areas and this is something that we have moved into more throughout the years again providing a hassle free job and leaving things as the clients expect and also want.

We are currently running a staff of six with Matthew managing the business and also doing work as time permits with Rose managing the office.

We believe in running a strong health and safety regime. To that end, we have regular training sessions with the staff and make sure they follow industry rules and regulations with regard to the Health and Safety act.

We are able to operate at short notice to the call of the community if there is a need. Matthew Fairmaid

Equipment

We run a 7 ton digger and a 10 metre reach telehandler, both of which have become very valuable tools for our business with the digger used extensively around the work we do on farms especially when we are building Cowsheds and Pole sheds. The Telehandler is also a piece of equipment that gets used on a regular basis with the reach of 10 metres being handy to get into those difficult spots and with the man cage on becomes invaluable when staff have to work at heights, it is also used as a crane so we are very self sufficient when those jobs that come along that a lot of small businesses would put in the too hard basket.

We also carry a lot of our own equipment so that we are able to operate at short notice to the call of the community if there is a need, we don’t have to go to the hire shop for a lot of gear as we have our own, some of the equipment we run are as follows:

  • compacters concrete saws

  • jack hammer
  • large industrial Drilling equipment for concrete
  • concrete finishing gear
  • mobile scaffolding
  • scaffold planks
  • a very large assortment of building equipment
  • 3 vans all well stocked when the staff arrive on site.

Matthew Fairmaid

Matthew started working for himself in 1990 as a joiner/carpenter in the Kowhitirangi/Kokatahi Valley Hokitika area as his trade is a joiner/builder. After 8 years of working by himself, he employed his first staff member. In the early 2000’s the dairy industry started to move into gear and so did the work load the dairy industry required. Staff numbers grew and has at times been as many as 10 but usually hovers around the 6 mark now.
